How To Use Walking To Transform Your Body and Mindset

Like many, I used to underestimate the power of walking as a form of exercise. I always thought in order to transform your body and optimise health, you had to spend hours in the gym working up a sweat to more intense workouts and believed that walking wouldn't make a significant difference. However, that all changed when I decided to give walking a chance. Summer was around the corner and I hated the thoughts of working out inside a hot, dark, sweaty gym. I needed to find a way where I could be outside but as the the same time get the benefits of moving my body, so to walk made the most sense.

At first, I started incorporating short walks into my daily routine, just aiming to get some fresh air and stretch my legs and find a route which I enjoyed. But as I continued walking consistently, I realised there was so much power in walking and that it came with a variety of benefits not just weight loss. Not only did I begin to notice physical changes in my body, but I also experienced a shift in my mindset.

Here are a few ways that walking can transform your body and mindset.

Physical Benefits

Not only does walking regularly allow you to burn calories and boost your metabolism, but it also provides an excellent opportunity to strengthen your muscles. Additionally, one of the greatest advantages of walking is its accessibility, as it can be enjoyed by individuals of all fitness levels and ages. This makes walking a highly sustainable exercise option that can be implemented into your daily routine for long-term health benefits.

Mental Well-being

One of the most profound benefits I discovered from walking were is its positive effect on my mental well-being. To the point I stopped walking for weight loss and started walking for mindset, you might have even seen on Instagram I go for my ‘mindset walks’ in the morning. A natural stress reliever and mood booster, when you walk, your body releases endorphins and serotonin, which are known as "feel-good" hormones These endorphins can help reduce stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression. Walking also provides an opportunity to connect with nature, clear your mind, and enhance creativity. If you like to walk with sound I suggest using this time to listen to an episode of Shoot for the Moon or some upbeat music.

Mindfulness and Mindset Shift

On your walks, romanticise your walks by becoming aware of your surroundings, embracing what you see, the sounds you hear, and sensations that unfold with each step you take. Try and stay in the present moment and pay attention to the rhythm of your footsteps, and the beat of your breath, this which serves as a gentle reminder of your connection to the world.

By doing this you open yourself up to a sense of tranquillity and serenity, but it also gives you an opportunity to cultivate a greater sense of self-awareness, allowing you to tap into your innermost thoughts and emotions. This introspective journey can serve as a valuable tool for personal growth and self-discovery.

Optimising Your Walking Routine

To make the most out of your walking routine and maximise the benefits, here are some tips:

Set Goals and Track Progress

Define your walking goals, whether it's by how many days of the week you want to do, how far you want to walk, will you increase your distance, your speed, or achieving a certain number of steps per day. Use a fitness tracker or an app to track your progress, and a habit tracker to hold yourself accountable, remember to celebrate milestones along the way. Seeing your progress can be highly motivating and encourage you to keep pushing forward.

Walk various different routes

Instead of sticking to the same route, have three to four different routes to keep your walks interesting and stop you from getting bored. Try walks around the block, in parks, through the high street and back, or around the neighbourhood. The most important thing if to be mindful about safety, if you’re walking at night, let somebody know where you are and that you are going on a night walk, keep one headphone out and be aware of your surroundings by checking around you ever so often.

Connect with Others

I love to solo walk to I can let my mind wander with ideas however if you’re someone who would do well with a walking buddy, consider walking with a friend or joining a walking group. Walking together can give you the motivation, accountability, and the opportunity to socialise while improving your physical and mental well-being. Sharing the experience with others can make your walks more enjoyable and help you stay committed to your routine.

Final thoughts

Walking has the power to transform your body and mindset in remarkable ways. And through my own journey and experiences, I've discovered the incredible benefits that walking offers, one being, IT’S FREE! By incorporating regular walks into your routine and optimising your walking practice, you can experience positive changes physically and mentally. As always all it takes to start is the first step. So, get some good walking trainers, a hot girl walk outfit and let’s get stepping.
