What is the Inner Child?
A concept that comes from the field of psychology, our inner child refers to the childlike part of our psyche that is still alive and well within us. This part of us is filled with innocence, wonder, and creativity, but it can also carry unresolved pain, trauma, and negative beliefs that we internalised during our childhood years and in most cases have brought into adulthood.
Why is Nurturing Your Inner Child Important?
It is important to understand that our inner child is a reflection of our past experiences and in turn influences our behaviour and emotions throughout our current reality.
Nurturing your inner child is what will help to maintain emotional balance and stability in your adult life.
When we don't address the needs of our inner child, we may experience a range of negative emotions such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and a lack of contentment throughout every stage of our lives. Because of this, it is crucial to learn how to reconnect and care for your inner child to achieve greater emotional freedom, self-acceptance, and joy.
One effective way to nurture your inner child is by doing activities that bring you joy and allow you to express yourself creatively, particularly activities you remember enjoying as a child. This could include painting, dancing, singing, baking, cooking, or any other form of self-expression that sparks something within you.
Another way would be to practice self-compassion and speaking kind words to yourself the same way you would a child, or even your own child.
This includes being kind and understanding towards yourself, even when you make mistakes or face challenges.

To take care of your inner child, start by acknowledging that this part of you exists. Reflect on your childhood and try to identify any lingering negative memories or unmet needs. At the same time, remember positive memories, such as family holidays or playing with friends.
Allow yourself to feel every emotion, without judgment, even if it is painful. If you find the emotions too overwhelming, consider seeking therapy and working with a professional to guide you through the process.
As you continue caring for your inner child, you may find that you are getting to know yourself better, making the journey easier step by step. You will become more aware of your emotions and experiences. Remember, healing is a gradual process, and it may take time before you start to feel progress. I keep a photo of my nine-year old self in my journal as reminder of my promise to her that I will do everything to make sure we get the life we came for.
Whether it be out loud, in your mind, writing a letter or simply spending some quiet time reflecting on fonder childhood memories, speak to your inner child. You may want to recall specific moments from your childhood that were particularly meaningful or joyful, and try to reconnect with those feelings. As mentioned earlier, engage in activities that you enjoyed as a child, such as singing, playing pretend, or running around outside amongst nature.
When you do this, you tap into the creativity, curiosity, and playfulness that are often associated with childhood, and bring those qualities into your adult life.
The goal is to create a deep and lasting connection with your inner child, so that you can better understand and nurture this important part of yourself.
3. Listen to Your Inner Child
When you connect with your inner child, it's important to listen to what it has to say. Your inner child might require more love and affection meaning you should delve more into self-care practices, or maybe they want you to take care of your health because it was a part of you which was neglected growing up, this would require you to feed yourself nourishing foods and start exercising. Or perhaps as a child you were always striving for perfection to please your parents, your inner child might want you to relax and finally reach for goals that you want to achieve.
Maybe you never felt heard as a child and your inner child wants you to use your adulthood as a chance start speaking up for yourself.
By listening to these needs and emotions, not only do you start an inner healing process, you rebuild a bond with yourself strengthening the relationship and building a strong layer of self-confidence.
4. Meet Your Inner Child's Needs
One of the most important things you can do to nurture your inner child is to meet its needs. Meeting your inner child's needs is essential for your emotional well-being, and it can be done in many different ways.
As well as engaging in creative activities, it's also important to do things that make you feel safe, secure and regulates your nervous system. This might be things like taking a warm bath, meditation, or spending time with loved ones and people who you can be yourself around. This can can help you feel grounded, which is essential for your emotional well-being.
5. Practice Self-Compassion
Nurturing your inner child is all about practicing self-compassion and self-care. Be gentle with yourself and allow yourself to experience all of your emotions, even the difficult ones.
Commit to doing the inner work.
It’s important you know that you are worthy of love and belonging, and living the life you have always dreamed of, by default. You’re place on earth solidifies it. And by nurturing your inner child, you rebuild and reaffirm that worth giving yourself the gift of emotional healing and growth.
